Reasons for Low Breastmilk Supply

Low breastmilk supply can be a very difficult thing to deal with as a new mom.

We are told breast is best but it is not always possible to breastfeed due to various reasons.

 

 

Low breastmilk supply is one of the reasons many moms don’t breastfeed because they cant.

Here are some reasons that you may be experiencing low breastmilk supply.

Waiting too long to breastfeed
Delay in introducing a baby to the breast for whatever reason can lead to low Breastmilk supply.
If the milk isn’t coming sooner, try as much as possible to keep the baby Latched as much as possible especially when they are hungry and reduce the use of supplements like formula or pacifier especially in the early stages

Breastfeeding less
The golden rule of breastfeeding and milk production is the emptier the breast is kept, the harder the body works to restock, the higher the rate of production. Keep your breasts as empty as possible to enhance production. This can be through breastfeeding on demand or by pumping.

Ineffective breastfeeding
A poor latch can make breastfeeding painful or make it harder for the baby to feed. A deep latch enhances proper milk removal hence increase in production. Any discomfort associated with breastfeeding can also affect a mom psychologically and hence reduce breast Milk supply. Latch issues could come from baby’s oral anatomy eg tongue ties, lip ties etc
Medication
Certain medications while taken by a breastfeeding moms can inhibit Breastmilk supply.
Traumatic birth
Breastfeeding depends on the mindset of the mother. Pain and stress during breastfeeding can cause low breastmilk production. You need to address the stress and then work on increasing breastmilk supply
